Description
Begin at the Arch of Charents, a viewpoint designed by architect Rafael Israelyan in 1957, featuring views of Mount Ararat and the engraved last line of Yeghishe Charents's poem.
Next, visit Garni Temple, built in the first century and dedicated to Mithra, the God of the Sun. It is the only preserved pagan temple in Armenia and the former USSR. The temple was destroyed by an earthquake in 1679 and restored between 1968 and 1975.
Proceed to Garni Gorge to see the Symphony of Stones, a natural UNESCO World Heritage site with hexagonal basalt formations resembling a giant organ across the canyon.
Then explore Geghard Monastery, a rock-hewn complex surrounded by 140 caves once inhabited by monks. Learn about the holy relic Geghard, the weapon of the Roman centurion Longianos, now preserved at the Holy Mother See of Etchmiatsin.
